Traditional Bag of Water Carrier on Jemaa El Fna

The water carriers of Djemaa El Fna have been an essential aspect to the daily life at the square. They provided the visitors with their daily needed amount of water. Even today you can find them at the „Square of the hanged“.

With their eye-catching red clothes and their colorful fringed heads they became a touristic attraction. They carry the water in in a leather bag on their back. The bowls to drink out of are made of copper and tin and attached to the clothes. With a small bell the water carrier announces his arrival.

Since the availability and use of plastic bottles the people of Djemma El Fna did not need their services anymore. But decades after they still exist as a tourist attraction. For a few dirham they will offer water or pose for a picture.
